Question

What is the common oxidation state of all the elements of alkali metals, halogens and noble gases?

Open in App
Solution

The common oxidation state for all the elements in alkali metal series is +1.
Reason: Alkali metals have only one electron in their outermost shell and become stable by losing 1 electron and hence the most common oxidation state is +1.

The common oxidation state for all the elements in halogen series is -1.
Reason: Halogens are the strongest non-metals in their respective periods and have 7 electrons in their outermost shell and become stable by gaining 1 electron and hence the most common oxidation state shown by them is -1.

The common oxidation state for all the elements in noble gasses is 0.
Reason: Noble gasses have 8 electrons in their outermost shell i.e. their valence shell is complete. They do not need to gain or lose electrons in order to become stable and hence they have an oxidation state of 0.
