Question

What is the correct order of cell cycle?

Open in App
Solution

Cell cycle:

The cell cycle is divided into three phases: interphase (G1, S, and G2), and mitotic phase (mitosis and cytokinesis).

Interphase:

G1 phase:

  1. The cell gets larger and produces more ribosomes, organelles, and proteins during the G1 phase, also known as the first gap phase.
  2. This phase guarantees that division will result in functional daughter cells that are the proper size and contain all of the necessary components.

S phase:

  1. A cell must make a copy of its genetic material in order to divide, allowing it to transmit one full set to each of its two daughter cells.
  2. To do so, the cell transitions from the G1 to the S phase, during which it synthesizes a complete copy of its DNA in its nucleus.

G2 phase:

  1. When DNA synthesis is completed, the cell enters the G2 phase, which is a second gap phase.
  2. During this phase, the cell expands, creating more proteins and organelles while also restructuring its contents in preparation for mitosis, which involves the division of duplicated DNA into two equal sets.
  3. Mitosis begins when the G2 phase ends.

M phase:

  1. The mitotic (M) phase follows the interphase.
  2. During the M phase, the cell splits its nucleus DNA and cytoplasm into two new daughter cells. Mitosis and cytokinesis are the two steps of the M phase.
  3. During mitosis, the mitotic spindle, which is mostly made up of microtubules, pushes the cell's nuclear DNA into visible chromosomes.
  4. Mitosis is divided into four stages of nuclear division or karyokinesis: prophase, anaphase, metaphase, and telophase.
  5. The division of cytoplasm into two daughter cells at the end of the karyokinesis is known as cytokinesis.

The correct order of the phases of interphase is: G1 → S → G2 → M.

The correct order of the phases of the M phase is Prophase → Metaphase → Anaphase → Telophase→ Cytokinesis.
