Question

What is the cosine of the angle which the vector 2i+j+k makes with y axis?

Open in App
Solution

For a vector
ai +bj +ck
direction cosinesare given by:
l=aa62+b2+c2.m=ba2+b2+c2,n=ca2+b2+c2
l=cosα,m=cosβ,n=cosγ,
where
α,β,γ
are angles made by the vectors with x-axis, y -axis and z-axis respectivley.
for the given vector 2i+j+k,
m=cosβ=12+1+1=14=12
therefore
β=π3
Thus angle made with y -axis is 60 deg.
