Question

What is the degree of dissociation?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Dissociation in chemistry is defined as the splitting of complex molecules, ionic species or compounds into simple ions, atom, or molecule.
  2. Degree of dissociation is defined as the fraction of solute ions( carrying current) dissociate at specific given temperature.
  3. Strong acid and strong bases have degree of dissociation equal to 1.
  4. Increase in temperature will increases the degree of dissociation of electrolyte.
  5. Degree of dissociation is represented by the symbol α.
  6. Mathematical representation of degree of dissociation is as follows:
α=λcλ0; where λc is the molar conductivity of weak electrolyte at “C” (concentration), λ0 is the molar conductivity of weak electrolyte at "0"
