What is the difference between
1. Element and Compound.
2. Compound and Mixture.
1. Difference between element and compound:
Elements are pure substances, which consist of only one type of particles. These particles can be atoms or molecules. For example, Carbon is made up of only carbon atoms, Hydrogen gas consists of Hydrogen molecules (formed from two atoms of Hydrogen) only etc.
A compound, on the other hand, is a pure substance which consists of two or more atoms of different elements, combined in a fixed ratio by mass. Also the properties of a compound are entirely different from that of the combining elements. Some examples of compound include water (formed from atoms of two elements - oxygen and hydrogen), sodium chloride (formed from sodium and chlorine), ammonia (formed from hydrogen and nitrogen) etc.
2. Difference between compound and mixture:
Compounds |
Mixtures |
The constituents are present in a fixed ratio. |
The constituents can be present in any ratio. |
Compounds are homogeneous in nature. |
Mixtures may not be homogeneous in nature. |
Properties of compounds differ from the constituent's properties. |
Properties of the mixture resemble the properties of the constituents. |
Constituents can be separated by chemical methods such as decomposition etc. |
Constituents can be separated by physical methods such as evaporation, filtration, distillation etc. |
