What is the difference between a scalar quantity and a vector quantity?

A scalar quantity is a quantity that has only magnitude. E.g. length, area, volume, speed, mass, density etc. On the other hand, a vector quantity has both magnitude and direction. E.g. displacement, velocity, acceleration, momentum, force etc.
