Question

What is the difference between a stereogenic center and a chiral center?

Open in App
Solution

The differences between a stereogenic center and a chiral center are discussed below:

Stereogenic center

Chiral center

  • A stereocenter is a point in a moelcule that gives rise to stereoisomers molecule
  • A chiral center is a carbon atom in which four different groups of atoms are present.
  • The carbon in the stereocenter is sp2 or sp3 hybridized.
  • A chiral center is sp3 hybridized.
  • It can have either three or four groups of atoms.
  • It essentially has four groups of atoms.
  • Stereocenters can have either single or double bonds.
  • Chiral centers have only single bonds around them.
  • For example in trans-2-butene, both 2 and 3 carbon atoms are stereogenic centers.
  • For example, the molecule given below has a chiral center.
