What is the difference between a true solution and colloidal solution?

True solution:

  • It is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances.
  • For example, sugar is dissolved in water.
  • The solution is having uniform composition throughout the solution, therefore known as a homogeneous mixture.

Colloidal solution:

  • It seems to be a homogenous mixture but is a heterogeneous mixture in actuality.
  • Milk is an example of a colloidal solution.
  • Though milk seems to be a homogeneous mixture due to its uniform composition throughout the solution but is a heterogeneous mixture as it is having physically distinct parts and non-uniform composition.
  • In the milk dispersed phase are fats, water, and proteins which are dispersed throughout the dispersing medium making it a colloidal solution.
