Question

What is the difference between allele and genes? How many alleles are present in human body?

Open in App
Solution

Gene is considered as a small stretch of DNA which acts as the molecular unit of heredity. Each gene carries some particular set of instructions necessary for building and maintaining the growth of cells and also passes the information to the offspring
Whereas, each gene may exist in alternative forms known as alleles, which code for different versions of a particular inherited character. If the alleles are similar it is called homozygous and if the alleles are different it is heterozygous.

There is no definite number as such, it varies from population to population.
