Question

Difference between chemiosmosis and electron transport chain.

Open in App
Solution

Chemiosmosis:

Chemiosmosis refers to the pumping of protons in the membranes of mitochondria through special channels from the inner to the outer compartment.

Electron Transport Chain:

In eukaryotes, the electron transport chain that takes place in the mitochondria is the site of oxidative phosphorylation.

Differences between chemiosmosis and electron transport chain:

Chemiosmosis

Electron Transport Chain

  1. The pumping establishes a proton (H+) gradient.
  1. It mediates the reaction between NADH generated in the citric acid cycle and oxygen to power ATP synthase.
2. After the establishment of the gradient, with the help of a transport protein called ATP synthase protons diffuse down the gradient. 2. It occurs in mitochondria in both cellular respiration and photosynthesis.
3. The relationship between chemiosmosis and ATP synthesis lies in the generation of a proton motive force. 3. Oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor in the mitochondrial electron transport chain.
