Question

What is the difference between conduction, convection and radiation?

Open in App
Solution

1)Conduction: Conduction is a process in which transfer of heat takes place between objects by direct contact, this is due the difference in temperature

Eg:heat transfer from a hot body to cold body through direction contact

2)Convection is the mode heat transfer by actual motion of matter .Convection takes place in liquids and gases.

eg; when we boil water in a pan ,the water at bottom will heat faster, then the hotter water from the bottom comes up and cooler water at top of the pan comes down and then cooler water will become hot, here the heat is transferred by transfer of matter

Radiation ; In conduction and convection we require matter for heat transfer,In radiation the heat is transferred in the form of electromagnetic radiation it doesn't require any medium for transfer of heat and the heat transfer by radiation is very fast
eg:Heat transferred from sun to earth is by radiation, the electromagnetic (like uv rays)wave from the sun comes to earth (through space) and the wave is converted to heat on reaching the earth surface
