What is the difference between diffusion and active transport?

Open in App
Solution

Diffusion:

The movement of any substance from a region of its higher concentration to a region of lower concentration is referred to as diffusion.

Active transport:

Active transport is associated with accumulating high concentrations of molecules that the cell needs, such as glucose, ions, and amino acids.

DiffusionActive transport
  1. Diffusion is a process in which substances move in and out of cells.
  1. It is the movement of a substance by using the energy against a gradient in concentration across a plasma membrane

2. Diffusion does not require energy.

2. Active transport requires the expenditure of energy in the form of ATP.

3. Example: the smell of perfume.

3. Example: uptake of minerals from soil by the roots.
