Question

What is the difference between electronics and electrical?

Solution

A hundred years ago there was only Electrical Engineering. Due to developments in technology of analog and semiconductor devices, Electronics engineering developed.

Electrical engineering deals with Electrical power generation, transmission, electrical circuits with Inductors, capacitors, Resistances, Electromagnetic induction and so on. Usually the voltages and currents etc. in EE are high.
The electronics circuits that are used for controlling electrical circuits and equipment are also part of electrical circuits. TV video tubes etc. are also electrical engineering. Manufacturing of heavy electrical equipment is also electrical engineering.

Electronics engineering deals with semiconductors, printed circuit boards, electronic hardware such as that present in computers, calculators, cell phones, tabs, iPhones, Telephone exchanges, TVs etc. IC or Integrated Chips are part of Electronics.

ELECTRICAL was in use back in the 19th century and did not use active devices like vaccum tubes and semiconductors. ELECTRICAL is not about power, nor is it defined by the use of voltages, currents, magnetic fields, or alternating and direct current - but about the use of ELECTRICITY as an energy source. Electrical is the use of Electricity. Take note of the word etymology- ElectricAL. The Latin AL definition, is a suffix with the general sense, of the kind of, pertaining to, or connected with ELECTRIC Energy.

ELECTRONICS is a word that was coined back in the early 20th century as a new branch of physics. Electronics did not truly come to the fore until Marconi, Flemming and Deforest developed the VALVE around 1906. Yet the humble Light Globe is also a vacuum valve ( called a Monode ) and was developed by Edison in the 1880’s.

ELECTRONICS is as it says ELECTRON(ics); and is the study of ELECTRON flow in circuit; - not Protons, not Nuetrons not Nuclear partials but - ELECTRONS. The ICS definition, means a suffix of nouns that denote a body of facts, knowledge, principles, etc. So ElectronICS is the body of facts, knowledge and principles pertaining to ELECTRONS.

ELECTRONICS utilizes all types of devices to control ELECTRON flow in a circuit. Electrons are negatively charged. ELECTRON FLOW is only one part of the atom.

ELECTRONICS incorporates the use of vacuum tubes which many run at 10’s and hundreds of K.V. ELECTRONIC devices run on ELECTRICITY as do Photonic devices ( ie: Photo Tubes and Opto Transistors and Photo Resistors ).

Electronics incorporates ANY DEVICE such as a switch, a transformer, a semiconductor, or anything, in which ELECTRONS that make up the current, voltage and magnetic field, can be manipulated.

ELECTRICAL on the other hand is more a management of ELECTRIC ENERGY. Those that carry out ELECTRICAL and ELECTRONIC work need to understand specific areas of Physics in order to understand basic circuit operation and electron manipulation.

The two fields Electrical and Electronics do over-lap, which today can be very confusing to differentiate
