Question

What is the difference between endosmosis and endocytosis, exosmosis and exocytosis

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Remember that endo means 'in' and exo means 'out'.

The difference between endosmosis and endocytosis is as follows:
Endosomosis Endocytosis
The movement of water molecules into the cell when placed in hypotonic solution is called as endosmosis. Endocytosis is the cellular uptake of molecules and particulate matter via formation of new vesicles from the plasma membrane.
It results in the swelling of the cell. Endocytosis allows the entry of molecules inside the cell by vesicles.

The difference between endocytosis and exocytosis is as follows:

Exosmosis Exocytosis
The movement of water molecules out of the cell when placed in hypertonic solution is called as exosmosis.
Exocytosis is the cellular secretion of molecules by the fusion of vesicles containing them with the plasma membrane
It results in the shrinkage of the cell.

It causes the removal of waste materials by the destruction of the vesicles.
