The difference between an External indicator and an Internal indicator is as follows,

External IndicatorInternal Indicator
When a chemical species is externally added to act as an indicator is called an external indicator.When one of the reactants is capable to behave as an indicator, is known as an internal indicator.
External indicator generally used in the acid-base titrations.Internal indicators generally used in the redox reaction.
Example: Methyl orange.Example: Potassium permanganate (KMnO4).
