When the exporter delivers the goods on the ship to the captain of the ship, Mate's receipt is issued to him. It is the proof that goods have been delivered in the ship. While Bill of lading is a document of title of goods. After obtaining the Mate's receipt, the exporter changes it for the bill of lading with the shipping company.
