They are small objects made up of stones present in space. As they enter the Earth's atmosphere at a high speed, they are heated up due to friction with the atmosphere and burn to ashes before reaching the surface.
If a meteor is extremely large, it does not burn out completely before reaching the Earth's surface. Such meteors are called meteorites.
