What is the difference between microvilli and cilia?

Open in App
Solution

Microvilli: Microvilli are finger-like membrane protrusions seen on practically all cell types that are sustained by the actin cytoskeleton.

Cilla: Cillia is eukaryotic cell organelles and is made up of microtubules arranged in (9+2) ultra-structure.

Difference between microvilli and cilia:

MicrovilliCillia
Definition: Microvilli are microscopically small protrusions from the cellular membrane. Definition: Cilia are hair-like projections that grow from the apical surface of a few epithelial cells.
Size: They are shorter and thicker than cilia, increasing the surface area available for absorption.Size: They are considerably thinner than microvilli.
Occurs in: Microvilli are found primarily in the columnar epithelial cells of the small intestine and renal tubules. Occurs in: Cilia are found in the columnar epithelial cells of the airways and fallopian tubes
Basal granules: Microvilli do not originate from the basal granules. Basal granules: Cilia arise from the basal grains.
Function: Microvilli increase absorption.Function: Cilia are involved in the movements.
Motility: Microvilli do not move. Motility: Cilia are movable.
