What is the difference between n21 and n12 ? please give any difference other than v1/v2=n21 and v2/v1=n12

Normally the notation followed is,

n21= refractive index of medium 2 with respect to medium 1.

What does the notation n12 means can be found from the text/context.

It could mean refractive index of medium 1 wrt medium 2 or the other way round. Read carefully the whole text and the notation would become clear
