What is the difference between nodal surfaces and nodal planes?

Open in App
Solution

Nodes

  • In an orbital, a node is a point or plane with a zero electron density.
  • Always surrounded by two or more lobes of the orbit.
  • Radial nodes and angular nodes are the two different types of nodes.

Difference between nodal surfaces and nodal planes

S. No.Nodal surfaceNodal plane
1A nodal surface is an area of space where the probability of finding an electron are zero.Nodal planes may be found in any p,d,f,... orbital.
2A radial node is another name for a nodal surface. An angular node is another name for a nodal plane.
3

Formula: n-l-1

n is the principal quantum number.

l is the angular momentum quantum number.

It can be found by determining angular momentum quantum number.
4Example: 2p has zero nodal surface.Example: 2p has one nodal plane.
