What is the difference between the origin of replication and promoter?
DNA replication:
Origin of replication: It is a segment of DNA that initiates replication on a chromosome, plasmid, or virus.
Promoter: These are DNA sequences that specify where RNA polymerase begins transcription of a gene.
Difference between the origin of replication and promoter:
Origin of replication: | Promoter |
1) The origin of replication is the site where replication is initiated. | 1) The promoter region is the region that initiates transcription. |
2) They must first attach to specific substrings, called primers. When they start, they copy attached filaments in the direction (3' → 5'). | 2) Typically, promoter sequences are found directly upstream or at the 5' end of the transcription start site. |
3) Any fragment of DNA, when linked to the ori region, can be initiated to replicate | 3) Promoter is the region where RNA polymerase attaches and transcription begins. |
