Question

What is the difference between potential and potential energy ?.Why is the potential at infinity 0 ?as I think there the Potential should be highest and the kinetic energy the least.

Solution

Dear Student ,
Electric potential is the work done upon a unit +ve test charge to bring it in the electric field of any charge from infinity without acceleration, while potential energy is the total work done to bring the unit charge from infinity to the point in the electric field without acceleration. As potential energy is potential multiplied by unit +ve charge , therefore U=V×q0=(kq)/r×q0,r=infinity , therefore V=zero As something divided by infinity is 0,so U=0.Thus here the potential energy is least and kinetic energy is highest .
