Question

What is the difference between pressure and thrust as applied to fluids?

Open in App
Solution

ThrustPressure
The force acting normally (perpendicular) on a surface is called thrust.

Pressure is defined as the thrust acting per unit area of a body.

Pressure=ThrustArea=NormalforceArea=dFdA

Thrust is a vector quantity since the direction needs to be specified (perpendicular).It is a scalar quantity.
SI unit of thrust is the same as that of force, i.e., Newton (N).SI Unit of pressure is Pascal (P).
