What is the difference between rhythm , melody and harmony?

Open in App
Solution

Melody is the part of a song that you would sing along with. If you are looking at the music on the page, it would be the top line or voice. It is in the foreground. The sequence of notes that forms a musical phrase, like a sentence. The horizontal progression of music.

Harmony is the other music notes that go along with the melody but aren't in the foreground. Harmony is more than one note that when sounding together creates a chord or something that sounds nice together. The vertical progression of music. Notes played together to form chords and other sonority. Provides support to the melody and directs the listener towards important structural points.
Rhythm is the duration that each note is played. It has nothing to do with the pitch (the highness or lowness of a note). It has everything to do with the beat and the combinations of lengths of notes. The way notes move through musical space. How fast or slow (tempo) is a component of rhythm. Rhythm is also the relationship between note lengths.
