Question

What is the difference between solvation and hydration?

Open in App
Solution

SOLVATIONHYDRATION
1. When any solute is added to any solvent then the molecules of the solvent surround the molecule of solute and bonded with either hydrogen bonding or via Vander Waal force of attraction and help in its dissolution. Thus, this process is called solvation.

1. When any solute is dissolved in water (solvent), the solute molecule is surrounded by the water molecules and helps in its dissolution called as Hydration.

i.e. solvation in which solvent is water is called hydration.

2. The polarity of solvent with the solute is the most important for its solvation.2. The polarity of water with the solute is the most important for hydration.
3. The energy release when the solute is added to a solvent is called as Solvation energy.3. The energy release when the solute is added to water is called as Hydration energy.
4. The solvation energy of the solution can be calculated as a change in Gibbs free energy4. The hydration energy of the solution can be calculated as a change in Gibbs free energy.
