What is the difference between the red bone marrow and bone marrow?

Bone marrow is the soft, highly cellular tissue that fills the internal cavities of the bones. Red bone marrow is red due to abundant blood vessels. In children, there is red bone marrow throughout the skeleton. In an adult, red bone marrow is replaced by yellow bone marrow. In an adult, the red bone marrow persists only in the vertebra, sternum, clavicles, pelvis, cranial bones and in the proximal ends of femur.
Functions of red bone marrow:
1. To produce red blood cells
2. It is the ultimate source for leukocytes and platelets. ​
