Difference between the remainder theorem and the factor theorem.

Remainder theorem

  • The Remainder Theorem states that dividing the polynomial p(x) by some linear factor xa, through long polynomial division, results in some polynomial q(x) . It can be expressed as:

p(x)x-a=q(x)+r(x)

Factor theorem

  • Factor theorem is commonly used for factoring a polynomial and finding the roots of the polynomial. It is a special case of a polynomial remainder theorem.
  • According to factor theorem, if f(x) is a polynomial of degree n1 then, (x-a) is a factor of f(x), if f(a)=0. If f(x) is a polynomial, then then, (x-a) is a factor of f(x), iff f(a)=0 ,where a is the root.
