What is the difference in the atomic models of J.J Thomson and Rutherford??
Thomson vs Rutherford Model of Atom
Thomson and Rutherford's models of atoms were the earliest models to explain the structure of an atom. After the discovery of the electron by J.J. Thomson, he proposed a model to explain the structure of the atom. Later, Rutherford discovered the nucleus and introduced a new model using both electrons and the nucleus. The main difference between the Thomson and Rutherford model of an atom is that the Thomson model of an atom does not contain any details about the nucleus whereas the Rutherford model of the atom explains the nucleus of an atom.
J.J Thomson Model of Atom | Rutherford Model of Atom |
1. Thomson model of the atom is the model which states that electrons are embedded in a positively charged solid material that is spherical in shape. | Rutherford's model of the atom is the model which explains that there is a nucleus in the center of the atom and electrons are located around the nucleus. |
2. Thomson's model of the atom does not give any detail about the nucleus. | Rutherford's model of atom provides details about the nucleus of an atom and its location inside the atom. |
3. According to the Thomson model of the atom, electrons are embedded in a solid sphere. | Rutherford's model says electrons are located around the nucleus. |
4. Thomson's model of atom explains that the mass of an atom is the mass of a positively charged sphere in which electrons are embedded. | According to the Rutherford model of the atom, entire mass of an atom is concentrated in the nucleus of the atom. |
