Question

What is the dimensional formula of pressure difference?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Definition

The stress at such a position within such a confined fluid, or rather the perpendicular force per unit area is called pressure.

Step 2: Formula:

P=FA

Here,

F is the force.

A is the acceleration.

Step 3: Derivation of dimensional formula

Since,

Pressure=Force×Area-1...(1)

Force=Mass×Acceleration

And,

Acceleration=Velocity×time-1=[LT-1][T-1]=[LT-2]

∴ The dimensional formula of force =[M]×[LT-2]=M1L1T-2...(2)

The dimensional formula of area =M0L2T0...(3)

By substituting equations (2) and (3) in equation (1) we get,

Pressure, P=[M1L1T-2]×[L2]-1

=M1L-1T-2

Here,

M is the mass, L is the length, and T is the time.

Therefore, the dimensional formula of pressure difference is M1L-1T-2.
