Magnet:

  1. Take a magnet and freely suspend it.
  2. Take note of the direction it comes to rest.
  3. If you observe it, you will notice that it always comes to rest along with the earth's north-south axis.
  4. This is known as a magnet's directive property.
  5. A magnet's directive property describes its proclivity to align itself along an external magnetic field.
  6. When a magnet is suspended in the air by a thread, it directs itself to align in the geographic north-south direction. This property of the magnet is known as the target's directive property.
  7. Magnets are used in the manufacture of electric motors, generators, compasses, and toys, among other things.
