Question

What is the drawback of active transport?

Open in App
Solution

Active transport:

  1. Active transport is the method through which materials move from a lower concentration to a higher concentration.
  2. Adenosine triphosphate allows molecules to move through a cell wall from one side to the other (ATP, which is required for cellular energy).

Drawbacks of active transport are:

  1. As more transporters fill up, initial transit times depend on concentration levels.
  2. The saturation of transport occurs when all transporters are used up.
  3. By the time maximum capacity is reached, concentration increases—no matter how significant—can no longer speed up transportation.
  4. It is easy to see where the volume of the substance being transported plateaus and the speed of transfer flattens out.
