Question

What is the effect of change of pressure upon the velocity of sound?

Open in App
Solution

Factors affecting sound:

  1. The factors affecting the velocity of sound are temperature, the density of air, type of medium, and velocity of the wind.
  2. In a gas the velocity of sound is calculated by:
  3. V=γPdwhereγisconstantforagasPisthepressureofthemediumdisthedensityofthemedium
  4. Here we see that velocity is directly proportional to the pressure but as pressure varies so does the density, hence the ratio Pd remains constant. Thus pressure doesn't affect the velocity of the sound.

Hence, the change of pressure doesn't affect the velocity of sound.
