Question

What is the effect of force buoyancy on the weight of a body?

Open in App
Solution

  • Weight: It is the gravitational force acting on a body in vertically downward direction.
  • Buoyant force: It is the force exerted by a fluid on the immersed object in vertically upward direction.
  • Both weight and buoyant force act in opposite direction.
  • So, the weight of the body is reduced when it is immersed in a fluid due to the opposition of buoyant force.
  • In the case of floating bodies, both weight and buoyant force balance each other so that the apparent weight is equal to zero.
