Question

What is the effect of rise in temperature on the velocity of sound?

Open in App
Solution

Effect of temperature on the velocity of sound:

  1. The velocity of sound at a particular temperature is given by: Vt=Vo273+t273wheret=currenttemperatureandVtandVoarevelocityofsoundattoCand0oCrespectively.
  2. Here we observe the velocity of sound is directly proportional to the square root of temperature. Thus, as the temperature rises the velocity of sound increases.

Thus, the rise of temperature positively affects the velocity, that is, velocity increases with an increase in temperature.
