What is the efficiency of a Fuel cell?

Open in App
Solution

Fuel cell: Galvanic cells that are designed to convert the energy of combustion of fuels like hydrogen, methane, methanol, etc. directly into electrical energy are called fuel cells.

Example: Hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell which utilized the reaction between hydrogen and oxygen to form water.

The efficiency of fuel cell:

  • The electricity produced by fuel cells has an efficiency of about 70%while the electricity produced by thermal plants has an efficiency of 40%.
  • Fuel cells are pollution-free.
  • Alkaline fuel cells are the most efficient type of fuel cells that has an efficiency of 60% and up to 87% when combined with heat/power.
  • Fuel cells are light in weight as compared to electrical generators to produce the corresponding quantity of power.
