What is the encystation in Amoeba?

Open in App
Solution

Encystation in Amoeba:

  1. Amoeba is a unique unicellular organism that has the ability to change its shape.
  2. Locomotion in Amoeba is by extending fingerlike projections called pseudopodia.
  3. Amoeba is found in water bodies such as ponds, lakes, etc.
  4. Under unfavourable conditions, Amoeba forms a three-layered hard crust or cyst around itself.
  5. This process is known as encystation.
  6. During encystation, Amoeba loses its motility as well as pseudopodal movements.
  7. When it reaches a favourable environment for its growth and survival, it breaks the cyst, and the process is known as excystation.
