Calcium carbide on Reaction with H2O gives acetylene:

CaC2+H2C2H2+Ca(OH)2

Addition of H2O or Hydration of Alkyne: Acetylene on reaction with dilute H2SO4 (or 20%H2SO4) in presence of 1%HgSO4 (or mercuric salt or Hg2+ ion at 80C or no temperature mentioned) gives acetaldehyde.
