What is the epidermal cell modification in plants which prevents water loss?

Open in App
Solution

Bulliform cells
  • Some modified epidermal cells present in the monocot leaves, which are large, empty and colourless are called bulliform cells.
  • When these cells face water stress, they become flaccid and cause the leaves to curl inwards.
  • This is done in order to prevent and reduce the water loss caused by transpiration.
Other epidermal cell modifications
  • Epidermis have a covering of thick waxy layer called cuticle.
  • Cuticle prevents water loss.
  • Epidermis have hairs (epidermal hairs) on stems called trichomes which also helps in preventing water loss.
