Question

What is the equivalent mass of the following?
(a) H3PO4 when neutralised to HPO42
(b) HClO4 neutralization by a base
(c) NaIO3 when reduced to I
(d) NaIO when reduced to I2
(e) Al(OH)3 neutralization by an acid

Solution

(a)Molecular mass of H3PO4=(3+31+64)=98 g.H3PO4 when neutralised to HPO24, two H+ ions have been replaced.
Thus, eq. mass =Mol. massNo. of replaceable hydrogen atoms
=982=49.0 g
(b) HClO4 molecule contains one replaceable hydrogen atom.
Thus, eq. mass =Mol.mass1=100.51=100.5
(c) Oxidation no. NaIO3+5I1
Change in oxidation number =6
Mol. mass of NaIO3=(23+127+48)=198 g
Eq. mass of NaIO3=Mol.massChange in O.N.=1986=33.0
(d) NaIO3+5I20
Change in oxidation number =5
Eq. mass of NaIO3=1985=39.6
(e) The acidity of Al(OH)3 is 3.
Eq. mass of Al(OH)3=Mol.massAcidity=783=26.0 g.
