Question

What is the fate of pyruvic acid during aerobic respiration and fermentation?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student,

Pyruvic acid during aerobic respiration is first converted into acetyl coenzyme A and then enters into the Kreb cycle which runs in the mitochondria where it gets oxidised into carbon dioxide, ATP and NADH2
In anaerobic condition, the pyruvic acid undergoes fermentation. It may be of two types viz., lactic acid fermentation, alcoholic fermentation and form lactic acid and ethyl alcohol respectively. In both types, there is no formation of ATP.

Regards.
