While adding $H_{2}$ to alkyne, if the reduction is to be stopped at the alkene stage, the catalyst needs to be poisoned with $C a C O_{3}$ / $B a S O_{4}$ /quinoline. Addition of $C l_{2}$ in presence of $C C l_{4}$ takes place by anti addition. (Two substituents are added to the opposite sides of a $π$ bond)
