Question

What is the force of attraction between the molecules of a substance called?

Open in App
Solution

  • Inter-molecular forces are the force of attraction between molecules of same substances.
  • The forces of attraction and repulsion that act between neighbouring particles are known as inter-molecular forces (atoms, molecules, or ions ). In comparison to intramolecular forces like covalent or ionic bonds between atoms in a molecule, these forces are weak.
  • Solids have strongest intermolecular forces whereas gases have smallest intermolecular forces between them.
