Question

What Is the formula of Corrosion of Silver?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Corrosion is the process in which the destruction of metals occurs by an oxidation reaction.
  2. Silver is malleable and soft in nature.
  3. Silver is usually resistant to corrosion because it does not oxide easily in air.
  4. When Silver is exposed to air a layer of Silver Sulphide is formed on the surface this is known as Corrosion of Silver. Silver surface reacts slowly in the air this is due to traces of Hydrogen sulphide ( H2S) reacts with Silver in the presence of air to form a black substance known as Silver Sulphide(Ag2S).
  5. Chemical reaction will be:

2Ag(s)+O2(g)Ag2O(s)Ag2O(s)+H2S(aq)Ag2S(s)+H2O(l)Silveroxide
