Question

What is the formula to find the flocculation value?

Open in App
Solution

Flocculation value:

  • The flocculation value is the minimum concentration of an electrolyte that is required to cause coagulation or flocculation of a sol.
  • It is expressed in terms of millimoles per liter (mmol/L).

The calculation for flocculation value:

Step 1: Take the example of coagulation of Sodium chloride in Arsenious sulfide sol

  • Let 2mL of 1M NaCl coagulates 500mL of Arsenious sulfide (As2S3) sol.
  • We can calculate the flocculating value for a sol as,

2mLof 1MNaCl contains 21000mol =2millimole

  • Therefore,500mL Arsenious sulfide sol requires2millimolesNaCl.

Step 2: Flocculation value of NaCl

  • 1000mLof Arsenious sulfide sol requires 4millimoles of NaCl.
  • Flocculation value of NaCl is4.

Hence, the Flocculation value of NaCl is4.
