Molluscs such as snails, squids, etc., are invertebrates with soft bodies covered by a hard shell of calcium carbonate secreted by the mantle.
The radula is used by molluscs for feeding. It has multiple rows of small teeth made of the polysaccharide chitin. New teeth replace the old teeth that have worn down with use.
The radula has three main functions:
The common periwinkle uses the radula to scrape off algae from rocks.
The limpet uses the radula to drill a hole in the rocks to make their home.
Predators such as moon snails use the radula to drill a hole in the shell of their prey.
