In human male sperm, the acrosome is a vesicle present at its tip. It contains soluble proteolytic enzymes. When the sperm comes in contact with the ovum there is acrosome reaction. This reaction enables the sperm to break through the protective coat of the egg which is zona pellucida. Hence the sperm enters the ovum and its plasma membrane fuses with that of the ovum followed by nuclear fusion resulting in fertilization.
