Solution

Functions of ADH:

  1. Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin is produced in the hypothalamus.
  2. The function of ADH is to control and monitor the amount of water reabsorbed by the kidneys thereby affecting the concentration of urine produced.

Factors that affect the urine volume produced daily:

  1. Certain foods such as a high-sodium diet and caffeinated beverages increase the amount of urine produced.
  2. If less quantity of water is consumed, more concentrated urine is produced and consumption of large amounts of water dilutes the urine and increases urine output.
  3. Certain medications such as for high blood pressure cause decreased urine output and antihistamines cause increased urine output.
  4. Some medical conditions such as diabetes insipidus cause increased urine output due to decreased levels of ADH produced by the pituitary gland.
