When a the cyanobacteria are exposed to unfavourable conditions, they select some cells for survival. these cells make their cell walls thick, secrete mucliage and store food./hibernate until conditions are favourable and then germinate in to the cells separate when the whole filament dies. The cells rest and germinate when the conditions become favourable. In this way they fight the bad conditions.
