What is the function of blood? Describe the different constituents of blood and their functions.

Blood is a special type connective tissue, red in colour that is present inside the blood vessels within our body.

Function of blood:

  1. Blood connect every part of the body and transports substances such as nutrients and oxygen to all body parts.
  2. It also collects metabolic and respiratory wastes from all body cells for excretion.

Different constituents of blood and their functions:

  1. Blood consist of three types of cells: red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets.
  2. The straw-colored matrix present between the blood cells is called plasma.
  3. Blood also contains dissolved salts and proteins.

Function of RBCs:

  1. The red blood cells or erythrocytes contain a pigment called hemoglobin.
  2. It carries oxygen to the different parts of the body.

Function of WBCs:

  1. The white blood cells or leucocytes protect the body against infections.
  2. They destroy most of the germs which enter inside the body.

Function of platelets:

Blood platelets or thrombocytes are responsible for the clotting of blood in case of an injury.
