The brain and the spinal cord are covered with a protective three-layered covering together called the meninges.
It has 3 layers- the outer dura mater, the middle arachnoid mater, and the inner pia mater.
These membranes have a space between them. The space between the dura mater and arachnoid mater is called the subdural space and the space between the arachnoid mater and pia mater is called the subarachnoid space.
The subdural space and the subarachnoid space are filled with a colorless alkaline fluid called the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Functions of CSF:
It helps in the exchange of nutrients, wastes, and gases.
